The dental community continues to struggle in the hiring space.  We get calls every day from dental offices asking for the secret recipe for finding candidates and  for help trying to understand why candidates don’t show for interviews despite promising conversations.  Salary, benefits, hours etc. are on everyone’s mind and on any dental social media market you look at.

I wish I had the perfect recipe but unfortunately I do not.  I do, however, have some thoughts to share…

I suggest using this time to look at the culture you have created in your practice.  Do you have excessive turnover and can you honestly assess why?  Are you offering your team compensation that is in keeping with what the market will bear? Are you connecting with your staff and do they feel that you care? We always say that your patients will not care what you know until they know that you care. A similar thought holds true for your team.  We can’t expect our employees to care if they don’t think that we do! If you find yourself, as the owner of the practice, dreading coming in to work,  think of the tone you are setting for the team.

Now let’s take a look at how you are trying to attract new employees. Take a look at the ad you may be running and try to adapt it so that it does not get lost in a sea of ads.  We did this with a client and believe it or not within the first week she had a full time hygienist!

Think of the reader and why they would want to apply.  What do you offer that is appealing and perhaps different than all the others?  And most importantly, word your ad with the reader in mind.  Focus the content on what you offer that would make me apply, not just what you are looking for. Remember, if you want a different result you need to go in a different direction…think outside the box and see what might happen!
